Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools. How do I install Office 365?
There is nothing to install. Office 365 is an additional service, and it works in conjunction with your current version of office (e.g. Office 2013 or Office 2016). You can continue using the same applications you used in the past, plus you get online versions of these same apps which you can use from anywhere, even on computers that don't have desktop version of Office installed. To access it, go to portal.office.com, type in your SMU email address into the first field and press Tab on your keyboard. You will be redirected to SMU login page where you can enter the password you use with your s# and click Sign in button.
How can students, faculty and staff sign up for Office 365?

Students, faculty and staff who have valid SMU email addresses can sign up and use Office 365 services, including Office 365 ProPlus and OneDrive for Business. Microsoft will enable the capability for students, faculty and staff to sign up for Office 365 simply by using their SMU email addresses.
Office 365 Education includes 1 terabyte (TB) of OneDrive for Business storage per user for with products included in Office 365 suite.
We are also eligible for Office 365 Education Plus, which includes Office 365 ProPlus, and allows students, faculty and staff to install the latest version of Office on up to five PC or Mac computers* and on other mobile devices, including Windows tablets and the iPad.
*Access and Publisher are available on PCs only. OneNote for Mac is available as a separate download from the Mac App Store.
Do I get anything else besides Office 365 ProPlus when I use the self-service process?
In addition to having access to the Office ProPlus client which has application like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, which work across your PCs and Macs, you can active the clients on your iPad, iPhone, and Android Phone, giving you access to edit and review your homework on the go. You also get 1 TB of storage through OneDrive for Business to ensure you access to all of your documents whenever you need them. If you using a computer that doesn’t have Office installed, don’t worry you can edit or review those assignments in Office Online in any browser.
I already use OneDrive. What happens to my data when I start using Office 365?
Your personal OneDrive account will not be affected. Office 365 comes with OneDrive for Business, which will be tied to your SMU account. Two versions can run side-by-side without any impact. The OneDrive for Business comes with increased storage limit.
Where will my data be stored?
In response to Legal and Privacy concerns, Microsoft launched Canadian datacenter region comprised of two geographically distributed datacenters located in Toronto and Quebec City. Almost all SMU Office 365 services are hosted in these datacenters. However, some recently released Office365 apps do store data outside of Canada. The apps that store data outside of Canada are: Flow, Forms, Planner, PowerApps, Sway, and Yammer (not used at SMU).
Due to the Personal Information International Disclosure Protection Act (PIIDPA), personal information should not be stored in these apps.
Will my data be secure?
Yes. Microsoft's Canadian data centre utilizes highest information security standards. The data will be encrypted both at rest and during transmission, which is an improvement over our current setup. Automatic backups with multiple levels of redundancy will ensure that your data is protected at all times.
What if I accidentally delete my data?
Automatic backups with multiple levels of redundancy ensure that your data is protected at all times. All deleted files are kept in online Recycle Bin for 93 days. You can manage your Recycle Bin using the OneDrive for Business web app that is part of Office 365. After 93 days files will be automatically deleted from Recycle Bin and will no longer be recoverable.

What devices can I use Office 365 ProPlus on?
Office supports PCs and Windows tablets running Windows 7 or higher, and Macs with Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. Office for iPad can be installed on iPads running version 7.0 or higher. For information about mobile devices, visit www.office.com/mobile.
What happens when I graduate?
When you graduate, your Office 365 subscription through Saint Mary's University ends. You may enroll into other consumer or commercial offers available. If you have Office 365 Education at your school, you should make sure to transfer all your files from your school OneDrive for Business to your personal OneDrive prior to graduation.
What does Office 365 ProPlus include?
Office 365 ProPlus comes with a full version of Office and familiar Office applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more. Office 365 ProPlus is a user-based service and allows each student to install on up to five PCs or Macs, and five tablets (iPad) and access Office mobile applications on iPhone and Android phones. (Office Mobile applications are included with all Windows phones).
Can students install Office for iPad through this Office 365 ProPlus benefit?
Yes, this would count towards the limit of installing it on 5 tablets. Just install the applications and sign in with your school ID.
Does this replace the Office 365 University product or Office Home & Student?

No, Office 365 University will continue to be sold to enable students at colleges and universities that do not take advantage of, or qualify for, this free benefit and likewise for the Office 365 Home Premium offer.
What are the differences between Office 365 University and Office 365 ProPlus for students?
Office 365 ProPlus includes additional organizational applications such as Skype for Business and a number of added technologies for organizational uses (Information Rights Management as one example) that are not available in Office 365 University. When schools combine the Office 365 ProPlus benefit with Office 365 Education, students get access to more advanced collaboration tools such as Outlook and Skype for Business.
If I recently purchased Office and am now also eligible for free Office 365 ProPlus through my school, will I receive any credit and/or compensation?
No. The Office purchased is a consumer offering and students can continue to take advantage of the purchased offer.
I can't find Skype for Business in my Office 365. Should I download it?
Online version od Skype for Business is now available only through Mail app. If you go to Mail, in the upper-right corner of the meny bar you will see an “S” icon that launches Skype for Business Online. However, for a variety of reasons we recommend using the desktop app. If you already have Office on your PC, there is no need to install anything, Skype for Business comes pre-installed. However, if you use Office 2013 the app is called Lync, which is a name Microsoft used before rebranding it Skype for Business. It has the same functionality, so please use it until you are upgraded to Office 2016.
What happens to my J drive or departmental share?
Nothing. Until further notice, SMU file shares will continue to work as before. The data on SMU network shares will also continue to be backed up on premise.
Do I still need my s#? / What is the difference between my s#, A#, email address, etc.?

Should I install Office 2016 on my work/school computer?

Smu Office 360
Office 2016 licences provided through our Office 365 subscription are for your personal use and should not be installed on work/school computers. ITSS has started deploying Office 2016 on SMU computers through our standard Evergreen process. Office 2013 that is currently installed on SMU computers is fully compatible with Office 365. If you find any compatibility issues between office 365 and Office 2013 please get in touch with Help Desk and let us know the exact nature of the problem.
I still have Office 2013 on my PC. What should I do?
Nothing. Office 2013 is fully compatible with Office 365. However, for more information please take a look at answers about Office 2016 and Skype for Business.
My department's generic email address has been migrated to Office 365 and now it doesn't work in Outlook. What should I do?
Some generic email accounts are set up set up using IMAP protocol in Outlook. After migration to Office 365, IMAP accounts are not able to receive new server settings automatically. To get your account working again, please follow the steps outlined in our Office 365 IMAP Settings Guide.
Do I have to do everything in Office 365 now?
No. Office 365 simply provides new functionality that will help us collaborate better and make it easier for us to do certain tasks. It does not replace your desktop version of Office and Outlook, it simply extends them into the cloud, allowing you to share your documents (if you choose to), hold online meetings via Skype for Business, work on your documents from mobile devices and computers without Office installed, etc. However, you can continue to use your Office and Outlook the same way you always have.

I was migrated and I stopped receiving email on my phone / tablet / favourite mail client. What should I do?
While Outlook will automatically fetch new server settings from Office 365, other mail clients and/or devices will need to have those settings changed manually. Please use the following settings to continue receiving SMU email:
