Double-entry accounting is utilized to ensure balanced books and accurate reports. When you first create your accounts in GnuCash, it is common to start them off with an initial balance. In the first transaction row, enter a date (eg: March, 1, 2006), a description (eg: “ Opening Balance ” ), click on the Transfer pop-up menu and select Equity:Opening Balances, add a deposit value of $1000, and press the Enter key. The overall interface of GnuCash Portable isn't too difficult to understand for anybody who has used tables and spreadsheets before. It can add and remove expenses and income quite easily while providing the option to split expenses.
GnuCash Portable includes a number of tools for dealing with external data and can import tables from QIF, OFX, MT940, MT942, DTAUS and simple CSV files. It also completes actions like scheduled transactions, online actions and budget controls.
Apart from personal finances, GnuCash Portable can also deal with business transactions out-of-the-box.
Due to the comprehensive nature of GnuCash, it can also create reports, export data to various database formats (MySQL, XML, PostgreSQL, CSV, etc.) and create notifications.
